Second look at Ubuntu 18.04 or Bionic

UpdateThis work is superseded by the release of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

The latest daily builds of Ubuntu 18.04 or Bionic Beaver now includes the newly Ubuntuised v4.15 kernel (Ubuntu 4.15.0-10.11) which includes config support to keep sound and BT working on Intel Atom devices now that serial device support is enabled through ACPI.

I've respun the 20180223 build using my 'isorespin.sh' script and created ISOs suitable for Intel Atom and Intel Apollo Lake:

  • Atom (-i bionic-desktop-amd64.iso --atom)
  • Apollo (-i bionic-desktop-amd64.iso --apollo)

What is arguably equally interesting is that Canonical asked the Ubuntu community to make it a new GTK theme based on Adwaita (the default GNOME theme) and inspired by Ambiance (the default Ubuntu theme). OMG! Ubuntu first posted about this and has now posted instructions on how to try the new theme.

I thought it would be fun to try this so I've respun the Bionic daily according to the above instructions and I've also included the wallpaper mentioned in the post. Because you need to select the ‘Communitheme’ session from the session selector on the login screen:

I included creating a user 'linuxium' with the password 'p' when respinning the ISO:

isorespin.sh -i bionic-desktop-amd64.iso --apollo \
-r ppa:communitheme/ppa -p ubuntu-communitheme-session \
-f Abstract-Geometric_1_1920x1080_wallpaper_-_1920x1080_Wallpapers.jpg \
-c "sed -i '/\[org.gnome.desktop.background\]/{n;s?/usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png?/usr/local/bin/Abstract-Geometric_1_1920x1080_wallpaper_-_1920x1080_Wallpapers.jpg?}' /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/10_ubuntu-settings.gschema.override" \
-c "sed -i 's/#  AutomaticLoginEnable = true/   AutomaticLoginEnable = false/' /etc/gdm3/custom.conf" \
-c "useradd -c linuxium -d /home/linuxium -m -g users -s /bin/bash linuxium" \
-c "echo linuxium:p | chpasswd"

Note that I've purposely not made the user an 'administrator' as the ISO is only intended to demonstrate the new theme.

If you are interested in trying out the new theme download the ISO from:

  • communitheme-linuxium-apollo-bionic-desktop-amd64.iso

and remember the password is 'p' (without the quotes). The ISO should work on any Intel based device and is sufficient to demo the new theme but is not suitable for proper usage due to wifi, bluetooth and possible installation limitations.

Please donate if you find the ISOs or script useful using the following link http://goo.gl/nXWSGf.

Hello,
I have a Z-83 II minipc (Atom X5 Z8350 with 2Gb RAM) and I have installed Linux Mint because I tough it was more appropriate for this kind of device. But after understanding that Wifi and sound is not working I started to think it was not a good idea.
Then I started googeling and I went to your blog.
After trying to use isorespin without success (no enough free space when starting from main disk, errors when trying to use it from USB etc..) I have seen that there was one ISO available for download in this blog. Hope was coming back after days of fighting with this machine....I thank you a lot for your efforts to make Linux useable on those machines.

OK so I created a bootable USB and installed your Bionic version on my machine and after reboot I have seen that the Wifi was present (Tested OK yepeee), but no sound from the Jack. Looking is the parameters - Sound, I just see that there is no visible device for sound output, and the output volume is just dimmed, cannot be activated.
Do you have some idea what I need to do to have the sound available on the Jack output? Is there a workaround in case of no solution?

I like the use of command line options: this may help in presetting Hi-DPI options.
I had tried building with 4.15.1 thru 4.15.4 but modules kept failing eg. ndiswrapper. I'll need to take a look at this one, remembering to add the sound patch for the Click Mini.
Thanks for all your work and inspiration.

i had the same problems on the same mini-pc. solved is with this page - https://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com/2017/10/fixing-broken-hdmi-audio.html
the commands i used:

aplay -D plughw:0,2 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav

then

sudo nano /etc/pulse/default.pa

then add below the line

#load-module module-alsa-sink
load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,2

reboot and it should work

1st impressions on the Click Mini are not good and it runs desperately slow (through a hub for a keyboard). A custom kernel is again required, methinks. Oh well, when I find some time...

Hello this is my first time using ubuntu installed via USB. My laptop is using the atom X5-z8300 quad core 64bit processor. I wanted to try your iso because of the atom support. Upon boot I have no wifi icon and when I check in settings it says no WiFi adapter found. Right now I'm using ubuntu by way of USB I have not installed it yet on my laptops HD yet. Do i have to full install first or do I have to download wifi firmware or drivers? I'm laptop used BROADCOM SDIO 43XX CHIPSET . THANKS AGAIN for your ISO .

I wonder if you can shed some light on this wee problem. I tried to run some commands, using the -c option but it is failing. Will I need to create a wrapper script, or some other method? Thanks.

From the log..
# gsettings set org.cinnamon.desktop.interface scaling-factor 'uint32 2'
(process:2651): dconf-WARNING **: failed to commit changes to dconf: Cannot autolaunch D-Bus without X11 $DISPLAY

thank for tip.
It didn't worked for the sound, I probably missed something.
Another problem is that Ubuntu is slow (slower than Linux Mint I tried first) and crashed 2 times (freeze). So I will come back on Mint and will try to respin it but my new tentatives are not OK : It boot from USB without any prob, but when I Install it I go to a dead screen after reboot without the key...Grrr

Could you generate ISO for Linux Mint? it could be nice for newbies like me who likes that distrib.

Linuxium said...

Have a look at 'http://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com.au/2017/10/fixing-broken-hdmi-audio.html' and see if that helps.

Linuxium said...

I don't think you can run 'gsettings' without an X11 display so you'll have to update and recompile the schemas similar to how I did it in 'https://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com.au/2017/10/ubuntu-cinnamon.html'.

Linuxium said...

See 'Wifi issues' in my documentation ('https://linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com.au/2017/06/customizing-ubuntu-isos-documentation.html').

Linuxium said...

It may be that the kernel is not seeing the headphone jack (typically BIOS related) so a patch is required. Unfortunately I don't have that specific device so I can't experiment for you.

i have now respined the daily build of Lubuntu (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/daily-live/current/)with an upgrated kernel v4.15.1 with the gui of isorespin.sh. all i can say is that i can see the fist time the sd-card-reader, hear sound of the head-jack and the normal sound with hdmi-cabel connected, with the changes for sound linuxium suggested. it is a z83-II, 2 gb ram mini-pc of bqeel! nice!

Christian Sandera said...

if you want to use mint on your z83-II it is not the best choice. a little bit to heavy for the 2gb of ram. i tried it on mine and it was boring. then i respined a daily-build of Lubuntu with kernel v4.15.1 and sound, headjack and sd-card-reader are now working ....

Unknown said...

hello. yes bt issues failed. in the log you can see in chroot, ignoring request. i don't understand why.

Unknown said...

Someone should offer Linuxium a knighthood.

Me and my wife had matching Nextbook nxw10qc32g tablets. Her Windows fell ill, and I gave mine to my daughter. I was able to purchase her a new laptop, but kept her Nextbook to play with. I put Xubuntu on it with a different uefi some months ago, but sound was a no go and and booting was hit and miss. Then, i stumbled across your blog.

Now I have a wonderfully portable form factor of a Linux Mint machine and I love it. For anyone curious, that was with the gui, use the atom option, and replace the kernel with v4.15.1. I am so happy now. Thank you so much.

What is the exact command you use to respin the ISO and can you boot and use 'pastebinit' or similar to post a URL to a copy of the output from 'dmesg'?

I'm sorry, too.
I use virtualbox under macos (but tests under ubuntu, linux mint, .. real on intelstick, with pc)
in the terminal: isorespin. sh. via the graphical user interface.

in the end: -i --atom -u or --atom with linuxmint, ubuntu, peppermint,...
but too with real syntax in terminal:
isorespin.sh -i IMAGELINUX -u -l rtl8723bs_4.12.0_amd64.deb
-f linuxium-install-UCM-files.sh -f wrapper-linuxium-install-UCM-files.sh
-c wrapper-linuxium-install-UCM-files.sh
i 've changed chmod with 777.

Every time failure for Bluetooth.

i use etcher under macos, rufus (method iso and dd), dd (linux).
But your two images and from VPShoster are ok.

What's wrong with me?
my last pastbin :

thanks for your attention

Linuxium said...

I'm unclear why you are adding your local copy of 'rtl8723bs_4.12.0_amd64.deb' (by using the '-l' option) to the ISO as this is typically the package that sets up wifi and bluetooth. Equally you also add your local files for UCM so there must be a reason? Have you tried just respinning with 'isorespin.sh -i IMAGELINUX -u --atom' and letting the script pull in the relevant wifi, bluetooth and audio files?

Another point to consider is that the wifi/bt package is dependent on the distro release with earlier versions requiring the '.*bs.*.deb' package and later ones the '.*bt.*.deb'. You haven't provided a value for 'IMAGELINUX' so it is difficult to determine whether it should be the 'bs' or 'bt' package. When using the '--atom' option my script looks at the release of the ISO and automatically pulls in the relevent package which is another reason for using the option.

Finally in an earlier comment I recommending looking at 'Bluetooth issues' in my documentation so what happens when you enter the command 'sudo systemctl start rtl8723bsbt.service' if bluetooth has failed to start? Try this only after respinning using the '--atom' suggesting as at this stage I don't know what your local package does.

hello linuxium

May be my english is so bad to explain my differents tests (about 30):

A) each time, result of isoprespin.log :
Starting Broadcom bluetooth service ...
Running in chroot, ignoring request.

test 1 : virtualbox macos, OS : linux mint 18.3 xfce
graphic interface after isorespin.sh in terminal
test 1a : --atom -u
test 1b : --atom
with respin : linux mint 18.3 xfce, cinnamon, ubuntu 17.04, Lubuntu, peppermint, etc .....

test 2 : virtualbox macos (macmini), OS : Ubuntu 17.04
same

test 3 : intelstick with one of your latest image :Ubuntu 18.04 or 16.04
same

test 4 : virtualbox macos, OS : linux mint 18.3 xfce
terminal : isorespin.sh -i LINUXIMAGE.iso -u -l rtl8723bs_4.12.0_amd64.deb
-f linuxium-install-UCM-files.sh -f wrapper-linuxium-install-UCM-files.sh
-c wrapper-linuxium-install-UCM-files.sh
i.e LINUXIMAGE : linux mint 18.3 xfce, cinnamon, ubuntu 17.04, peppermint, etc .....

test 5 : virtualbox macos, OS : ubuntu 17.04
terminal : isorespin.sh -i LINUXIMAGE.iso -u -l rtl8723bs_4.12.0_amd64.deb
-f linuxium-install-UCM-files.sh -f wrapper-linuxium-install-UCM-files.sh
-c wrapper-linuxium-install-UCM-files.sh
i.e LINUXIMAGE : linux mint 18.3 xfce, cinnamon, ubuntu 17.04, peppermint, etc .....

test 6 : intelstick with one of your latest image :Ubuntu 18.04 or 16.04
terminal : isorespin.sh -i LINUXIMAGE.iso -u -l rtl8723bs_4.12.0_amd64.deb
-f linuxium-install-UCM-files.sh -f wrapper-linuxium-install-UCM-files.sh
-c wrapper-linuxium-install-UCM-files.sh
i.e LINUXIMAGE : linux mint 18.3 xfce, cinnamon, ubuntu 17.04, peppermint, etc .....

test 7 : lenovo t420, OS : linux mint 18.3 xfce
with interface graphic and with terminal

so i can continue, but i think you have understand.

B) i tried with 'bs' and 'bt' too

C) resultat is nothing but it's normal because bluetooth drivers are not ok in isorespin.sh log :
./linuxium-install-broadcom-drivers.sh: Starting Broadcom bluetooth service ...
Running in chroot, ignoring request.

So thanks for your time.

Linuxium said...

You said you have a STCK1A32WFC?

So first the 'error' in the isorespin.sh.log you refer to (./linuxium-install-broadcom-drivers.sh: Starting Broadcom bluetooth service ... Running in chroot, ignoring request.) is not an error as it is correct and as expected.

Secondly your STCK1A32WFC doesn't have a Broadcom wifi/bt chip but a Realtek wifi/bt chip so again you can the message anyway.

Thirdly Ubuntu 17.04 is EOL so should not be used.

Fourthly just try one test at a time to make debugging easier.

Try downloading the newly released Ubuntu 16.04.4 ISO and then respin using the command 'isorespin.sh -i ubuntu-16.04.4-desktop-amd64.iso --atom' and then create a bootable USB using 'dd'. Next boot from your USB and if bluetooth hasn't started enter 'sudo systemctl start rtl8723bsbt.service' in a terminal session. Then post the results complete with a 'pastebinit' link to a 'dmesg' after booting and a copy of your 'isorespin.sh.log'.

hello linuxium

oh my god, you're right ...... i need glasses ..sorry. i'm noob...

so i've success with respin ubuntu 16.04, all it's ok.

so now i'm trying with linux mint xfce, problems are :
no bt and no wifi ...

sudo systemctl start rtl8723bsbt.service
[sudo] Mot de passe de gv :
Job for rtl8723bsbt.service failed because the control process exited with error code. See "systemctl status rtl8723bsbt.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.

my dmesg :
https://pastebin.com/7eB01sQG.

i'm going to try anoter respin with linuxmint xfce
sorry i've deleted the isorespin. log but in image of linux mint :
/usr/local/bin/isorespin.sh Version 8.0.8
--iso "/home/gv/Bureau/linuxmint-18.3-xfce-64bit.iso"
--atom (-l rtl8723bs_4.12.0_amd64.deb)

(-f linuxium-install-broadcom-drivers.sh -f wrapper-linuxium-install-broadcom-drivers.sh)
(-c wrapper-linuxium-install-UCM-files.sh -c wrapper-linuxium-install-broadcom-drivers.sh)

so i will back soon
thanks for your time.

Wifi won't work for you with linuxmint just with basic respinning as the Ubuntu kernel used (4.10.0-38) doesn't include the RTL8723BS wifi driver. You should either upgrade the kernel to the latest version or to a specific version which supports your wifi (in this case as a minimum a 4.12 kernel). So try either of the following:

# latest kernel
isorespin.sh --iso "/home/gv/Bureau/linuxmint-18.3-xfce-64bit.iso" --atom --update

# latest HWE kernel (suitable for linuxmint 18.3 XFCE)
isorespin.sh --iso "/home/gv/Bureau/linuxmint-18.3-xfce-64bit.iso" --atom -p "linux-generic-hwe-16.04 linux-signed-generic-hwe-16.04"

I recommend you try the HWE kernel first.

Unknown said...

hello
i'm back, with option -u ie kernel v4.16-rc4.
wifi is present but not bluetooth, in live CD
sudo systemctl start rtl8723bsbt.service
no message.
I will try next days with isorespin.sh --iso "/home/gv/Bureau/linuxmint-18.3-xfce-64bit.iso" --atom -p "linux-generic-hwe-16.04 linux-signed-generic-hwe-16.04"

thank you so much. have a good day.
for me i'm going to sleep.

Linuxium said...

If still no bluetooth (unlikely) then post the output from 'sudo systemctl status rtl8723bsbt.service'.

Linuxium said...

Is 'secure boot' enabled in the BIOS and if so does disabling it fix booting?

Unknown said...

hello linuxium

great news : all is ok with
isorespin.sh --iso "/home/gv/Bureau/linuxmint-18.3-xfce-64bit.iso" --atom -p "linux-generic-hwe-16.04 linux-signed-generic-hwe-16.04"

there was no chance for me to find ....

thank you so much

So the next step is for meegopad t02, but for the moment : no sucess.
i've tried your image ubuntu 16.04 but bt is again down and after compil my own kernel 4.14.18 it's worst ... lol : no bt and no wifi.
i've tried too with peppermint because meegopad is less performant.
mypastebin :
https://pastebin.com/uFn37a3g

https://pastebin.com/S7DA4GFn

Could i have another good advise please ?

i think when you'll support debian, it will better for meegopad with mx-17 or other light linux.

best regards

Linuxium said...

It looks like the Meegopad T02 might be 'wired' differently.

Enter the following command once you have booted your respun ISO:

sudo sed -i 's/ttyS4/ttyS0/' /lib/systemd/system/rtl8723bsbt.service

Then enter the command:

sudo systemctl start rtl8723bsbt.service

and see if bluetooth works.

In theory if you 'do-release-upgrade' from 16.04 to 17.10 and then 'do-release-upgrade -d' to 18.04 you should find that no kernel patches are required on the STK1A8LFC. Probably best to make a backup of your data first though just in case.

Hi,
I'm trying to install Linux in my Chuwi Hi10 Plus (intel atom Intel Z8350).
I tried with the latest daily version of Ubuntu 18.04 from official Ubuntu and looks like works with the Intel Atom by default, what is the difference with the version from here for Atom ? thank you

Successful booting of official ISOs on Intel Atom devices is dependent on the device's hardware and BIOS. Respinning an ISO with the '--atom' option adds support for a 32-bit bootloader, both RTL8723BS and Broadcom wifi and bluetooth firmware and userspace files together with ALSA UCM files for audio support. Some devices need all of this, some only parts and some (which sounds like your device) none. The ISOs I now post are to demonstrate my 'isorespin.sh' script rather than for supporting specific hardware although depending on need this becomes intrinsically linked.

Hi, First of all many thank for your nice job.

To run an:Intel® Atom™ x5-Z8350 CPU @ 1.44GHz × 4 Memory: 1.9 GiB,
I "resspin" Ubuntu-MATE 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" - Alpha amd64 (20180307.1)
Release 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) 64-bit
Kernel Linux 4.15.0-10-generic x86_64 MATE 1.20.0
Wifi is out of order:
ubuntu-mate@ubuntu-mate:~$ dmesg | grep -i error
[ 2.707011] RAS: Correctable Errors collector initialized.
[ 28.038368] bluetooth hci0: Direct firmware load for brcm/BCM4345C0.hcd failed with error -2
[ 28.333838] platform regulatory.0: Direct firmware load for regulatory.db failed with error -2
[ 29.960610] brcmfmac mmc1:0001:1: Direct firmware load for brcm/brcmfmac43455-sdio.txt failed with error -2

Then the file brcmfmac43455-sdio.txt is missed in /lib/firmware/brcm
With this file everything working!
